Megan Thee Stallion is Making Rap Videos Fun Again
How the Grammy-award winning star is showing her innovation, while tapping into her nerdy side.
Megan Thee Stallion has already solidified herself as a powerhouse in her own lane, and she continues to shed her skin and transform into a new innovative, serpent-themed, era. Her new music video “BOA”, released on May 10, had anime and videogame fans rejoicing and not only showcased her Hot Girl Nerdy side but also as a newfound music video visionary.
The music video tells the story of three friends sitting to play a new, forbidden videogame “The Curse of Thee Serpent Woman.” In the Mortal Kombat, Streetfighter, and Crash Bandicoot-esque videogame, each of them meets an ill-fitted fate reflective of the game. All with Megan center stage and donning costumes inspired by Tekken, Space Channel 5 and the anime One Piece.
The Grammy-award-winning rapper is a known anime fan, having cosplayed as several characters in the past from Mirko in My Hero Academia to Satoru Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen and even being a presenter at Crunchyroll Anime Awards last March.
Megan has brought something fun to Hip-Hop music videos we haven’t seen in a very long time. From the imaginativeness of the concept oozing with pop culture references, the upbeat, heavy groove of the song— produced by LilJuMadeTheBeat with a Gwen Stefani sample— and her unique costumes; there is a pleasing quirkiness that comes when watching the visuals “BOA.”
This innovativeness in this era when it comes to videos is something unlike anything we have seen from a Hip-Hop artist in a while. Even following the video release of her more vulnerable and sultry hit, “HISS”—with other anime references and Megan shedding her skin while bringing light to her truth still paying homage to her nerdy side, “BOA” is full of fun storytelling and mesmerizing visuals. From the independent artist dressed in a Scott Pilgrim, Space Channel 5-inspired outfit twerking on a Dance Dance Revolution table, or throwing punches and kicking a man in the face in a cosplay of Christie Monteiro from Tekken. Visuals such as “BOA” are reminiscent of the fun video styles of Missy Elliott for example, who brought her own originality and creative ideals into Hip-Hop music video elements like the ever so popular “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” or even “Beep Me 911.”
As for nerds everywhere, well— we applaud Megan Thee Stallion for blending her own passions for pop culture into her own art, in fact, we truly can’t get enough of it.
